Eli Tomac v Ken Roczen Reflects on Weekend Battles, Struggles with Starts, Suspension, and Optimism for Abu Dhabi
Ken Roczen’s weekend at the motocross event was filled with intense competition, particularly with his rivals Eli Tomac and Joey Savatgy. Despite his best efforts, Roczen found himself dealing with some challenges that ultimately affected his results. “My starts are still not great, and I have to say, and this is not an excuse by any means, but I struggled with this dirt big time – it’s just not my favourite at all,” Roczen said. The track conditions were clearly a point of frustration for the 30-year-old, who admitted that the dirt didn’t suit his riding style, which ultimately hindered his ability to challenge for the top positions.
In addition to the track surface, Roczen mentioned that he was still getting accustomed to a new suspension setup. “I’m also on new suspension so I just felt a little bit unfamiliar,” he explained. While it’s common for riders to experiment with different setups during the season, the transition period can sometimes lead to a sense of discomfort and uncertainty on the bike, something Roczen admitted he was dealing with this weekend.
Looking Ahead with Optimism
Despite the setbacks, Roczen was quick to remain positive. “The most important thing is that we’re healthy, and we tried everything we can to do the best,” he said, focusing on the bigger picture. While this particular race didn’t go as planned, Roczen is determined to reset and come back stronger.
With 10 days between the current race and the next in Abu Dhabi, Roczen is excited for the opportunity to refocus and aim for a win. “I’m excited for the next race – it’s unique there and very hot,” he added. The challenging conditions in Abu Dhabi could provide a fresh challenge for all riders, but it also gives Roczen the time he needs to adjust and prepare mentally and physically.
A Strong Season Ahead
Although Roczen’s weekend wasn’t perfect, his determination and focus remain unwavering. With the series moving to a different environment in Abu Dhabi, he is hopeful that a change of scenery will play into his strengths.
