Visma DS Downplays Van Aert’s Time-Trial Hopes at Volta ao Algarve: “Not a Priority Right Now”
Wout van Aert’s chances in the time trial at the Volta ao Algarve have been downplayed by Visma | Lease a Bike’s directeur sportif. According to the team, Van Aert is currently focused on other aspects of his preparation, and competing for victory in the race against the clock is not his primary objective at the moment.
The Belgian star, known for his versatility across multiple disciplines, is making his season debut at the Portuguese stage race as part of his build-up towards bigger targets in the spring. While Van Aert has previously shown his strength in time trials, Visma | Lease a Bike has clarified that he is not specifically targeting the discipline at this event.
“Time trials are not a goal at the moment,” a team representative stated, emphasizing that Van Aert’s focus lies elsewhere. The 29-year-old has his eyes set on key classics such as Milan-San Remo, the Tour of Flanders, and Paris-Roubaix. Given this, his performance in the Algarve time trial will be more of a form test rather than a serious attempt to win.
Van Aert’s time trial ability has been one of his strong suits over the years, with impressive results in both Grand Tours and one-day races. However, his current approach suggests that he is prioritizing endurance, race sharpness, and adapting to competition intensity rather than fine-tuning his time-trial prowess.
Despite this, fans will still be eager to see how the Belgian performs on the 22km time trial stage, which could serve as an indicator of his early-season condition. The Volta ao Algarve is known as a key warm-up race for riders preparing for the classics and stage races, attracting a competitive field each year.
Van Aert’s campaign in 2025 is expected to be an ambitious one, with major goals spread across the spring classics, the Tour de France, and potentially the Olympics. His team’s statement suggests that his performance in Portugal will be more about race rhythm and testing his legs rather than chasing victories.
As the Volta ao Algarve unfolds, all eyes will be on Van Aert’s form, even if the time trial isn’t a priority. His performance could still offer valuable insights into his condition ahead of a packed season filled with high expectations.
