In a heartfelt tribute to Serena Williams, World No. 476 Andreea Prisacariu recently shared her thoughts on the legendary American tennis icon, calling her the greatest player in women’s tennis history. Prisacariu, a Romanian professional currently competing on the ITF circuit, took to her X (formerly Twitter) handle to express her admiration for Williams and her unparalleled impact on the sport.
Prisacariu’s post came after a discussion about the greatest players in women’s tennis, where, despite the mention of several current stars, the 23-time Major winner’s name was the only one that mattered to the 25-year-old. According to Prisacariu, while many tennis fans debate the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) title, there is no question in her mind—Serena Williams stands head and shoulders above all others.
“I was into this conversation today that got interesting and at some point we were talking about who’s the greatest player in women’s tennis… and some current players were named… But honey, there’s only one correct answer and that is Serena Williams,” Prisacariu wrote on X on Friday.
What makes Prisacariu’s words notable is that she did not bring up the names of legendary players like Steffi Graf and Margaret Court, who have long been considered potential contenders for the title of greatest female tennis player.
Steffi Graf, who dominated the sport in the late 1980s and early 1990s, is remembered not only for her 22 Major singles titles but also for her historical achievement in 1988, when she became the first and only player (male or female) to win the Calendar Golden Slam—a feat that includes all four Grand Slam titles and Olympic
Nonetheless, Prisacariu’s bold stance in favor of Williams is rooted in the American’s influence both on and off the court. Serena Williams’ career transcended the boundaries of tennis, bringing awareness to the sport like few others have. Her 23 Grand Slam singles titles—the most by any player in the Open Era—alongside 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, cement her legacy as one of the greatest athletes in history.
A career marked by groundbreaking achievements, Williams was also a force for social change, often using her platform to advocate for equality and women’s rights. Her longevity in the sport, spanning over two decades, and her domination of the game during a period of intense competition, solidified her as an unparalleled figure in tennis.
Prisacariu’s respect for Williams is also personal. In a December 2023 interview, the Romanian revealed a childhood memory of being asked about her favorite tennis player. At just seven years old, Prisacariu gave an innocent yet telling answer—”Novak”—in reference to Novak Djokovic, another tennis great. This early moment highlights the deep connection tennis players often have to the sport’s biggest stars, and how Serena Williams’ influence on the game leaves a lasting impression on younger generations of players.
Although Andreea Prisacariu has yet to break into the top tier of the WTA rankings, with a career-high doubles ranking of No. 200 and a total of six ITF singles titles and 10 ITF doubles titles, she understands the significance of Williams’ accomplishments.
Serena Williams, who retired from professional tennis after the 2022 US Open, left an indelible mark on the game. Her last professional match came at the hands of Ajla Tomljanovic in a gripping three-set loss, signaling the end of an era for the sport. Since her retirement, Williams has focused on her family and various business ventures. She is the founder of Wym Beauty, a cosmetics brand, and S by Serena, her jewelry line. Additionally, Williams is a prominent venture capitalist through her firm Serena Ventures and an investor in several sports teams, including the National Women’s Soccer League’s Angel City FC and the Los Angeles Golf Club, a TGL team.
Though Serena Williams has moved on from competitive tennis, her legacy continues to inspire athletes, including rising stars like Andreea Prisacariu. With her powerful impact, Serena remains a beacon of success and excellence for the world of women’s tennis and beyond.
As the tennis world watches its next generation of champions rise, one thing remains certain: Serena Williams will forever be synonymous with greatness.
