Crypta Launches $60K Fundraiser After Tour RV Destroyed by Illinois Tornado During U.S. Tour

Brazilian death metal band Crypta faced a major setback during their U.S. tour in April 2023 when a tornado struck Belvidere, Illinois, destroying their rented tour RV and forcing them to halt their schedule temporarily. The incident occurred shortly after a show at the Apollo Theatre, where a powerful storm system caused widespread damage across the area, leaving the band without essential transportation and lodging.

The storm, which was classified as a severe tornado by weather authorities, devastated parts of northern Illinois, with winds strong enough to flip vehicles and tear roofs from buildings. Crypta, who had been touring the U.S. in support of their debut album Echoes of the Soul, was caught directly in the path of the storm.

Fortunately, no members of the band or crew were injured, but the RV, which served as both a vehicle and temporary home, was completely totaled. The loss included not only the RV itself, but personal belongings, tour equipment, and travel essentials. The estimated cost of damages exceeded $60,000, prompting the band to launch a fundraising campaign to help cover the financial blow.

In a heartfelt message shared across their social media platforms, Crypta wrote:
“We’re incredibly thankful that we’re safe, but the destruction of our RV has put us in a very difficult situation. We’ve lost a lot and we’re asking our fans and the metal community to help us get back on our feet so we can continue the tour.”

The response from fans was swift and supportive. Fellow musicians, promoters, and fans across the globe shared the campaign, donating and spreading the word. Crypta’s transparency and humility throughout the situation further endeared them to the international metal community.

At the time, the band was touring alongside other heavy acts, and despite the setback, they managed to resume select dates on the tour after arranging alternative transport. The resilience and unity shown by the band in the wake of the disaster became a defining moment in their early career.

This event highlighted not only the unpredictable challenges touring musicians face but also the strength of community in the heavy metal scene. Crypta’s handling of the crisis, combined with the outpouring of fan support, reinforced their place as a rising force in the global metal world—not just for their music, but for their courage and connection with their audience.
