The sun shone tenderly on the farewell ceremony of Debbie De Cauwer, daughter of former cyclist and commentator José De Cauwer. Family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances came together to honor her, to remember her and to say goodbye to a woman who touched their lives in a way that words can hardly describe. The atmosphere was filled with love, memories and a deep gratitude for the time that they had been able to share with her.

A Life Filled with Love and Humor

Debbie was not just anyone. To her children she was the sun in the house, to her friends the listening shoulder, and to everyone who met her, a sparkling personality who always radiated warmth and positivity. In the speeches that were held during the funeral, a few sentences kept coming back. One of them: “You really were the supercoolest mom ever, our friends often said.”

Those words came from the hearts of her children, and they were the essence of who Debbie was. She was not just a mother in the traditional sense of the word, but a true ally, someone you could laugh with, cry with, talk about life with, and even dance with in the living room on a weekday.

The Bond of a Family

José De Cauwer, visibly moved, spoke candidly about the loss of his daughter. “Losing a child is the hardest thing there is,” he said in a trembling voice. “But today we celebrate who Debbie was – a strong woman, a loving daughter, a mother with a heart of gold. She lived life to the fullest, gave without reserve, and her laugh always sounded just a little bit louder than the rest.”

He also referred to their shared passion for sports, humor, and their endless conversations about life. Although José is known as an analytical and down-to-earth man in his professional life, he spoke today as a father whose heart is broken, but who is also proud of the soul that was his daughter.

Friends Witness Her Impact

Several of Debbie’s friends spoke, each with their own memories. From campfire stories on vacation to nights spent talking about dreams and fears. “Debbie could listen without judgment,” said one childhood friend. “You felt safe with her. She gave advice without wanting to control you. She let you go, but held you when she had to.”

Another friend added: “She was the first person you knocked on when you were at a loss, and also the first to dance on the table when there was something to celebrate.”

Debbie’s children spoke to their mother in an emotional letter. “You gave us wings to fly and roots to return. You taught us that vulnerability is not weakness, but strength. You were always there, in small things and in big moments. And although you are now physically gone, we feel you closer than ever.”

They emphasized how they will continue to carry on her legacy of love, strength and self-mockery. “Mom, you were our hero. You taught us how to find our place in the world without hurting anyone else. And that makes you not only the coolest mom, but also the most beautiful soul we have ever known.”

A Last Greeting, Not a Last Love

The ceremony ended with music that Debbie herself liked – including “Fix You” by Coldplay and “Vivre” by Céline Dion. Seas of flowers surrounded her photo, in which she was seen smiling broadly, as she was in life: with open arms and a smile that welcomed everyone.

Debbie De Cauwer leaves an indelible impression on the hearts of many. Her name is now whispered in memories, her voice resounds in stories, and her love continues to resonate in the people who loved her.
