As the 2025 Tour de France rolls into gear, the spotlight is once again fixed on Jonas Vingegaard, the Danish cycling sensation and two-time Tour champion. Despite his braces and his stature in the sport, Vingegaard remains humble and laser-focused, recognizing the stiff competition and the importance of team unity as he prepares for yet another grueling three-week battle.

At the Tour presentation on Thursday, Tadej Pogačar, his perennial rival and one of the sport’s most decorated climbers, offered a striking compliment: he referred to Vingegaard as the best mountain biker in the peloton. While most riders might soak in such praise, Vingegaard took a more modest approach.

“That’s a nice compliment from Tadej. He’s a cool guy,” said Vingegaard at the press conference. “But honestly, I think he was stronger than me in the Dauphiné. I don’t know if I fully agree with what he said, but hopefully, I can be better here at the Tour. We have a strong team, and we believe in our plan.”

The Dauphiné, widely regarded as a key preparatory race for the Tour de France, saw Pogačar edge out his rival with superior climbing form. Yet Vingegaard, who has shown remarkable consistency over the years, is confident he can rise to the occasion when it matters most.

One of Vingegaard’s greatest strengths is the team around him, and this year is no exception. American rider Matteo Jorgenson, who finished an impressive eighth overall in last year’s Tour, has significantly elevated his performance since then. Yet despite his own ambitions, Jorgenson is firmly committed to supporting Vingegaard in the mountains.

“Matteo is here for Jonas,” confirmed team sources. His role will be pivotal in pacing Vingegaard through the brutal climbs and shielding him from attacks by rivals like Pogačar and Remco Evenepoel.

Adding more firepower to the Visma-Lease a Bike squad is Belgian powerhouse Wout van Aert. Known for his versatility and all-round brilliance, Van Aert also has his eyes set on donning the yellow jersey, at least briefly. But the team’s ultimate goal remains clear: getting Jonas Vingegaard to Paris in yellow.

“The main objective is to get Jonas in the yellow jersey at the end of three weeks,” Van Aert stated. “If I get a chance to wear it along the way, that’s a bonus. But we’re here for Jonas.”

Another key figure in the team’s strategy is Simon Yates, who has joined forces with Visma this season. While Yates is committed to supporting Vingegaard, he’s also made it clear that he won’t be giving away time unnecessarily in the early stages. Having a teammate high up in the general classification has historically been a strategic advantage for Vingegaard, offering the team tactical flexibility against aggressive rivals like Pogačar.

Perhaps most striking is Vingegaard’s mindset going into this year’s race. Though officially a two-time Tour de France winner, he feels as though he’s already won four times—referring to the deep satisfaction and personal victories he’s experienced throughout his Tour campaigns.

“I’ve been on the stage every time I’ve ridden the Tour,” he said. “To me, each of those has felt like a victory in its own way. But obviously, standing on the top step twice has been special.”

As the Tour de France begins, all eyes will be on the battle between Vingegaard and Pogačar, a rivalry that has defined modern cycling. But beyond the individual competition, it’s clear that for Vingegaard, the journey is about the collective strength of his team, the execution of a meticulously crafted plan, and a relentless pursuit of improvement—even after years at the top.
