Cincinnati Reds trade Star player to Philadelphia as club gives reasons
The Cincinnati Reds traded left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert to the Philadelphia Phillies. However, it didn’t really trade – at least not in the traditional sense. Philadelphia will send the Reds an undisclosed amount of cash to buy out his contract. In baseball, this is considered a trade for a reason.
After the 2023 season, Tyler Gilbert went straight into the Diamondbacks organization and cleared waivers. He became a free agent in November, and in January the lefty signed a minor league contract with the Reds that included an invitation to major league spring training. Spring training was good for Gilbert from a statistical standpoint.
He lasted five games and pitched 9.0 innings, giving up two earned runs, walking one batter and striking out 11 of 41 batters. However, that performance landed him back in minor league camp on March 18. When the regular season began, the Reds sent Tyler Gilbert to Triple-A, where he went to the Louisville Bats.
He made three starts and four innings of relief, and to say things didn’t go well would be an understatement. He posted a 13.11 ERA in 11.2 innings in which he allowed 24 hits — but no home runs — and walked six batters. That’s 2.57 WIP. He struck out 13 of the 63 batters he faced in his time at Louisville. Gilbert, who threw a win in his first major league start in Arizona in 2021 (he made three previous starts), now returns to the Phillies.
He was selected by Philadelphia in the 6th round of the 2015 draft and remained with them in the minors until he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers after the 2020 season. Arizona then took him in the minor league version of the Rule 5 draft and then spent much of the 2021 season in Triple-A before being called up in August. Since then, he bounced back and forth between Triple-A and the big leagues, all with the Diamondbacks until 2024, when he was with Louisville. .
