Coach Dan Lanning’s Post-Game Statement on On Matayo Uiagalelei’s Impact and on Gabriel’s pass to Ferguson through multiple Wisconsin defenders After No. 1 Oregon Defeats Wisconsin
After No. 1 Oregon’s dominant win over Wisconsin, Coach Dan Lanning addressed the media, praising his team’s performance and highlighting standout plays that contributed to the victory. Lanning reflected on individual performances and the collective effort that led to the Ducks’ triumph.
On Matayo Uiagalelei’s Impact
One of the standout performances in Oregon’s win came from defensive lineman **Matayo Uiagalelei**. Lanning was quick to praise Uiagalelei for his continued development, noting his growing influence on the field.
“I think everybody’s taking notice of what kind of player Matayo is,” Lanning said. “The entire front put on, did a great job tonight. And Matayo certainly has shown the ability to be a great player for us.” Lanning pointed out that while Uiagalelei has the talent to make a significant impact, he remains humble and team-focused, attributing much of his success to the support and play of those around him.
“He gets better and better every single week, and he’d be the guy to tell you that it’s about the people around him. It’s about the coverage that existed on that play to create that. It’s about the batted ball that was in the air that he took advantage of,” Lanning added,
The play Lanning referenced came in the second half when Uiagalelei intercepted a tipped pass, helping shift the momentum in Oregon’s favor. Lanning underscored the importance of that takeaway, noting, “We didn’t have any takeaways in this game until that play. And that one certainly was a big one.”
On Dillon Gabriel’s Impressive Pass to Terrance Ferguson
Offensively, Lanning also commended quarterback **Dillon Gabriel** for his composure and playmaking ability, particularly on a stunning pass to tight end **Terrance Ferguson**. The throw came under pressure, threading the needle through multiple Wisconsin defenders to keep a crucial drive alive.
“Yeah, I mean, we probably had a little good luck there. But we also had a play that, guy makes a great catch and, impressive play by Dillon and to keep it alive and find somebody down the field,” Lanning said. The coach acknowledged that while the play might have involved some fortune, Gabriel’s decision-making and Ferguson’s ability to make an acrobatic catch were vital components of the play’s success.
Lanning’s comments highlighted the synergy between Gabriel and Ferguson, as well as the importance of staying focused in high-pressure situations. The play showcased the Ducks’ offensive resilience, with Gabriel keeping his eyes downfield and Ferguson making a spectacular grab in traffic.
