Congratulations To Western Bulldogs Marcus Bontempelli After Being Nominated for the MVP Awards, As he Reflects on his ..
Western Bulldogs champion Marcus Bontempelli has been named All-Australian captain as Melbourne ruck star Max Gawn joined an elite group of players with his seventh selection in the team of the year.
Carlton skipper Patrick Cripps was named vice-captain to fellow Brownlow Medal contender Bontempelli, who earned his sixth All-Australian blazer.
Minor premiers Sydney are well represented with four players — Errol Gulden, Nick Blakey, Chad Warner and Isaac Heeney — in the side, which was selected on the basis it was going to play in a match.
No other club had more than two representatives.
Gulden and Collingwood midfield star Nick Daicos were picked on the wings, meaning there was no room for Hawthorn’s specialist wingman Massimo D’Ambrosio to complete his rags to riches tale with a first blazer.
Cripps’ Blues teammate Jacob Weitering finally broke through for his first selection, named at full-back.
Weitering was one of seven players picked for the first time alongside Nick Blakey, Chad Warner, Jake Waterman, Jesse Hogan, Dylan Moore and Adam Treloar.
Hogan was named at full-forward after a career-best season in which he kicked 69 goals from 23 games and was a clear winner of the Coleman Medal.
Waterman also had a career-best campaign in 2024, recovering from serious illness which threatened to derail his career before starring for West Coast with 53 goals in 20 games.
Gawn edged out North Melbourne ruckman Tristan Xerri for the ruck position and is now one of 10 players in the history of the game with at least seven All-Australian selections.
Gawn matches Wayne Carey, Stephen Silvagni and current All-Australian selector Nathan Buckley with seven blazers each.
The record is eight, held jointly by Gary Ablett Snr, Gary Ablett Jnr, Patrick Dangerfield, Lance Franklin, Robert Harvey and Mark Ricciuto.
Six players retained their All-Australian places after being named in last year’s team: Dan Houston, Caleb Serong, Zak Butters, Daicos, Gulden and Bontempelli.
Port Adelaide defender Houston was named despite receiving a five-match suspension for his high bump on Adelaide’s Izak Rankine during this month’s fiery Showdown.

Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli claimed the Leigh Matthews Trophy as the AFL Players Association’s MVP, ahead of Carlton star Patrick Cripps and Sydney’s Isaac Heeney.
But the AFL Coaches Association champion player of the year award went to Collingwood gun Daicos, also ahead of Cripps and Heeney.
The honours were bestowed upon the pair at the AFL Awards ceremony in Melbourne on Thursday night.
Bontempelli, Daicos and Cripps, the 2022 winner, are among the leading Brownlow contenders this season, along with Heeney and the Brisbane Lions’ two-time winner Lachie Neale.

Daicos polled coaches votes in 16 of his 23 games this season, including a maximum 10 votes on five separate occasions.
Bontempelli was also named best captain by the AFLPA, with Port Adelaide star Zak Butters the most courageous player and West Coast sensation Harley Reid the best first-year player.
Reid was ineligible for the league’s Rising Star award – won by Geelong’s Ollie Dempsey – because he served a two-match suspension for a dangerous tackle mid-season.
North Melbourne’s prolific Harry Sheezel won the AFLCA’s best young player award, which recognises players based on performances over their first two seasons.

Geelong livewire Ollie Dempsey has capped his breakout season by claiming the AFL Rising Star award after early favourites Harley Reid and Sam Darcy were ruled ineligible through suspension.
Calls on the league to change eligibility criteria were rejected in June when West Coast sensation Reid and Western Bulldogs gun Darcy were both banned for two matches.

The AFL maintained a “fairest” component should be maintained in the criteria.
It left Dempsey a clear standout among the competition’s eligible young talents, with his outstanding form for the premiership-contending Cats franked in a runaway Rising Star win.

Dempsey polled 52 of a possible 55 votes, with North Melbourne’s George Wardlaw (43) second and the Brisbane Lions’ Kai Lohmann (21) third.
Dempsey received the Ron Evans Medal and $20,000 in prize money after polling a maximum five votes from nine of the 11-member selection panel, chaired by AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon.

Originally a rookie draft selection, Dempsey managed just seven games as a fringe player over his first two seasons but has become a key figure in the Cats’ rise back into the top four this year.
The 21-year-old has kicked 21 goals in 23 games, averaging 17.6 disposals, 5.4 score involvements and 1.0 goal assists as an influential player in the front half of the ground and on the wing.
Dempsey is the second Geelong player to win the Rising Star award after club great Joel Selwood in 2007.
Reid and Darcy were both handed two-match suspensions over separate incidents in round 12.
No. 1 draft pick Reid was banned for rough conduct over a dangerous tackle on St Kilda’s Darcy Wilson, who finished fourth in the Rising Star award with 15 votes.
Bulldogs father-son recruit Darcy was banned for his late hit on Collingwood defender Brayden Maynard.
Reid was named the AFL Players Association’s best first-year player ahead of Wilson and Melbourne winger Caleb Windsor.
North Melbourne’s prolific Harry Sheezel won the AFL Coaches Association’s best young player award, which recognises players based on performances over their first two seasons.
Sheezel was the Rising Star winner last year at the end of an outstanding debut season.
2024 AFL RISING STAR AWARD:
1. Ollie Dempsey (Geelong) – 52 votes
2. George Wardlaw (North Melbourne) – 43 votes
3. Kai Lohmann (Brisbane Lions) – 21 votes
4. Darcy Wilson (St Kilda) – 15 votes
Saints defender Josh Battle set to join Hawthorn
St Kilda defender Josh Battle has joined West Coast vice-captain Tom Barrass in nominating Hawthorn as his club of choice.
Battle informed the Saints on Thursday he will use his free agency right to move to Hawthor
As an unrestricted free agent, Battle can join the Hawks without St Kilda having the right to match the offer.
Battle’s decision came just two days after Barrass, who is contracted until 2027, told West Coast he wants to move to Hawthorn.
The Hawks will now have to satisfy West Coast with a suitable trade, with the Eagles expected to ask for two first-round picks as an initial bargaining position.
Battle, taken with pick No.39 in the 2016 national draft, played 123 games across eight seasons for the Saints.
He started his career as a forward before making a successful switch to defence, where he formed a strong combination with fellow key back Callum Wilkie.
“I came to this club while I was still in high school and couldn’t have asked for a better place to grow, both as a footballer and a person,” Battle said in a statement.
“I now have a young family of my own and in planning for our future I’ve come to the difficult decision to move on from my time at the Saints.
“The club has been fantastic throughout this entire process and I leave so grateful for the support they’ve shown both my family and I.
“I’d like to thank all my teammates, coaches and staff who have made my time at the Saints so special, as well as the Saints fans who embraced me from day one.”
The Saints could try to lure Melbourne’s unrestricted free agent Adam Tomlinson as a replacement for Battle.
Richmond look set to be the club hardest hit during the trade period after Shai Bolton, Liam Baker and Daniel Rioli all requested trades.
The contracted Bolton is likely to join Fremantle, while out-of-contract Baker is yet to nominate West Coast or the Dockers as his destination of choice.
Rioli is keen to join Gold Coast to reunite with his former coach Damien Hardwic
Collingwood defender John Noble also wants to join the Suns.
Melbourne premiership player Alex Neal-Bullen, who told the Demons two weeks ago he wants to head back to South Australia, is keen to link up with Adelaide.
He could be joined at the Crows by contracted Suns forward Jack Lukosius, who was dropped by Hardwick late in the season before winning back his place for the final game.
Collingwood have reportedly expressed interest in out-of-contract Suns midfielder Alex Davies..
