Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson confirmed the club’s interest in West Ham’s Maxwel Cornet during the deadline day, revealing that they pursued a deal for the 27-year-old winger. Cornet has had limited playing time with West Ham this season, featuring only twice in the Premier League and scoring against Sheffield United in January during his first start of the campaign.

Despite being on the bench for West Ham’s recent 1-1 draw with Bournemouth, Cornet’s potential inclusion in Crystal Palace could have provided valuable cover for left-back Tyrick Mitchell, given Cornet’s versatility to play in that position. The Ivorian international joined West Ham at the beginning of the 2022-23 season and has accumulated 31 appearances for the club.

Hodgson expressed his satisfaction with the business conducted by Crystal Palace during the transfer window, commending the club for their shrewd moves. He specifically addressed the pursuit of Cornet, stating that it was a prospect that excited them. However, despite the initial interest, West Ham ultimately decided not to let Cornet go on loan, leading to the deal falling through.

The Crystal Palace manager expressed disappointment that the potential addition of Cornet to their squad did not materialize, as he believed the winger would have been a valuable asset. The complexities of transfer negotiations and last-minute decisions by clubs often play a crucial role in determining the outcome of such deals.
