In a candid conversation on *The MetalSucks Podcast*, Crypta’s bassist and vocalist, Fernanda Lira, shared insights into the band’s new album *Echoes of The Soul* (out June 11) and revealed the emotional journey that led to her departure from Nervosa, the thrash metal band she helped form and grow into a major success.
Reflecting on her decision to leave Nervosa, Lira explained that although the move was incredibly challenging, it ultimately felt like a necessary step in her evolution as a musician and individual. She described it as a moment of personal rebirth, despite the emotional toll it took on her.
“It’s a rebirth. I knew I needed to leave Nervosa, all of us that were playing there knew that it would be best,” Lira said. “It wasn’t like something happened; it was a decision that was taken, and I just felt I had the guts. Better to take the step that I knew would be better for everyone.”
Though the decision was tough, Lira is now at peace with it, recognizing that both she and her former bandmates are thriving. Nervosa has released an album that’s been well-received by fans and critics alike, while Crypta, the band she co-founded, is gearing up for the release of their debut full-length album.
“I’m glad I took the step,” Lira said. “But, I won’t say it was easy. It was definitely the hardest decision I ever had to make in my life. It was so painful. The first time I ever thought of that, I was like, ‘Noooo, please!’ I was scared of even thinking about it. It was really tough. And when I finally thought I was ready to quit, I felt so bad. I was in a pretty bad place emotionally.”
Despite the initial pain, the formation of Crypta played a significant role in Lira’s healing process. The band had already begun to take shape nearly a year before she made the decision to leave Nervosa, initially as a side project. The presence of Crypta helped soften the transition, as Lira wasn’t starting from scratch but instead had a supportive band already in place. This made the painful separation more manageable and provided the creative outlet she needed during a difficult time.
“It was really comforting that Crypta was there because at least I wouldn’t have to start from ‘scratch scratch,’ choosing a band name and a band logo,” Lira laughed. “It made things easier, but it was still a hard rebirth.”
Lira’s journey has been an emotional rollercoaster, but she is now in a much better place. She expressed immense pride in both Crypta and Nervosa, noting that both bands are now in a position of happiness and creative fulfillment.
“I’ve been through a lot, but in the end, I’m pretty glad now that we’re all happy, all sides are happy, and creative again and motivated again and happy again,” Lira said. “But, it was tough.”
As Crypta prepares to release *Echoes of The Soul* and Nervosa continues to thrive with its new lineup, it’s clear that both Lira and her former bandmates have found their paths to success—albeit through a challenging and deeply personal journey.
