Fernandez reveals hilarious game-changing advice her coach gave during win against Elena Rybakina in Cincinnati Open
Canada’s emerging tennis star Leylah Fernandez has captured attention once again with her remarkable performance at the Cincinnati Open.
The 21-year-old Fernandez demonstrated her prowess on the court by defeating world number four Elena Rybakina in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, during the third round of the tournament on Friday.
Fernandez, who made headlines by reaching the US Open final in 2021 at just 18, revealed an intriguing piece of advice she received from her coaching team during the match.
Speaking to the Tennis Channel after her victory, Fernandez shared that her coaches advised her to focus on strategy rather than physical attributes, noting,
Despite Rybakina’s impressive skills and physical advantages, Fernandez managed to neutralize her opponent’s strengths by employing patience and precision. Fernandez praised Rybakina for her exceptional talent and powerful play, saying, “Elena is such a great player.
The way she’s able to time everything and hit the ball so quick, so fast, and so heavy too… it’s truly inspiring. I just tried to be patient as much as possible. Trying to put one more ball back in any which way.”
Looking ahead, Fernandez is set to face American Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Pegula advanced to this stage by defeating Taylor Townsend in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
This upcoming match will be their second professional encounter; Pegula won their first meeting earlier this year at the Miami Open with a score of 7-5, 6-4.
Fernandez’s continued rise in tennis is a testament to her resilience and tactical acumen, and her clash with Pegula promises to be another exciting chapter in her burgeoning career.
