As the 2024 MotoGP World Championship approaches its final five rounds, reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia is gearing up for a fierce title battle with Jorge Martin. With only 21 points separating them, the stakes are high as they head into the Japanese Grand Prix this weekend.
In a recent interview, Bagnaia reflected on the intense rivalry that has characterized their seasons, particularly as both riders emerged as frontrunners in 2023.

“From the start of the season, more or less, we have been the difference between the rest,” Bagnaia stated. “However, mathematically, others can still become champions, so we have to consider them. It’s easy to make mistakes and have crashes, which can quickly change the championship landscape.”
Bagnaia emphasized the unpredictable nature of racing, asserting that both he and Martin are well aware of the risks involved.
“The Championship can change quickly, so I will consider them until it is mathematically impossible,” he said. Despite the competition, he believes that he and Martin will continue to lead the pack, maintaining that their rivalry is poised to extend through to the final round in Valencia.
Discussing his relationship with Martin, Bagnaia noted the significance of their ongoing battle. “It looks exactly the same but from the opposite sides! I think it is nice to have a battle with Jorge again. We have always had fair fights and respect between us, and I expect it will be the same this season,” he remarked. The Italian described the 2024 season as a “continuation, not a rematch” of their previous encounters, underscoring the mutual respect that has defined their rivalry.
Bagnaia also recognized the challenges faced this season, admitting that both riders have struggled with consistency. “2024 has been tough in terms of mistakes for both of us, but Jorge has been more consistent,” he said.
“For us, we need to take a step forward in the next couple of races in terms of performance. We have been missing something in the last races, but I am very happy to be here, fighting to the end with Jorge.”
