Francesco Bagnaia sends agresive Warning to Jorge Martin About Nerves in MotoGP Title Showdown
With the 2024 MotoGP season reaching its dramatic conclusion at the Solidarity Grand Prix in Barcelona, reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia** has issued a warning to his title rival, Jorge Martin . Martin enters the final round leading the standings by 24 points, but Bagnaia believes the pressure of being the favorite could impact his rival’s performance. Speaking to TNT Sport, Bagnaia highlighted how nerves, a common challenge for riders in title-deciding situations, could play a pivotal role in the outcome of the championship.
The Pressure of Being the Favorite
This year’s finale is already being called the Solidarity Grand Prix due to the devastating flooding that led to the cancellation of the Valencia GP earlier in November.
Martin, who has yet to experience a title-deciding showdown in MotoGP, will feel the intense pressure of being the leader in the standings. Bagnaia, who has been in similar situations before, knows all too well how difficult it can be to handle the nerves that come with the responsibility of being the favorite.
“For Jorge, it will be tough because it’s the first time he is fighting for a championship in MotoGP,” said Bagnaia. “I know the feeling, and I think he will try to do the maximum, but sometimes nerves can make you more aggressive and make errors.”
Bagnaia’s experience in 2022 is a perfect example of how nerves can impact performance. Despite holding a 23-point advantage over Fabio Quartararo going into the final race of that season, Bagnaia struggled under the pressure, finishing only ninth in the race. However, the result was still enough to secure his first MotoGP title, a testament to his consistency over the season. This year, Martin, in a similar position, will need to control his emotions to avoid mistakes that could cost him the championship.
Bagnaia’s Strategy: Keep Pushing
Despite Martin’s strong lead, Bagnaia remains determined to fight until the end, taking nothing for granted. With 10 Grand Prix wins in 2024, including a thrilling victory over Martin in Malaysia, Bagnaia has shown he has the pace to challenge for the title. The Ducati rider has been particularly strong in Barcelona, where he won the Catalan GP earlier this year, though his hopes for a strong finish are tempered by the cooler conditions expected this weekend.
“We know how strong I was in Barcelona in June, but it will be tricky for the conditions because I think it will be very cold and easy to make some mistakes,” Bagnaia said. “It will be important to remain calm, try to avoid any mistakes, and try to win both races.”
This cautious approach is critical, especially given the added risk of racing in November, when lower temperatures can make tire management and bike control more challenging.
A Title Decided by Nerves?
For Martin, the experience of being in the title hunt is uncharted territory. While he has demonstrated immense speed and talent throughout the season, this is his first time with the championship on the line. The nerves and pressure of having everything to lose may make him overzealous at times, and Bagnaia’s advice is clear: stay calm, avoid mistakes, and push to the limit.
But even as Martin feels the weight of the title chase, Bagnaia remains focused on the task at hand. “Right now, the only thing I need is to continue pushing, continue trying to win, and hoping,” he said.
