This past weekend, the renowned Matterley Basin Grand Prix track in the United Kingdom played host to one of the most significant events in motocross: the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN). This year’s competition was especially thrilling, as Australia clinched its first-ever MXoN victory, while Team USA, despite a whirlwind of last-minute changes, fought valiantly to secure a respectable second place.

“Pressure and nerves are inherent at the MXoN,” Thomas explained. “However, I believe there was less pressure this time around. The expectation to win wasn’t as strong, allowing for a more relaxed atmosphere. Fans appreciated the last-minute efforts, which fostered a ‘Let’s go shock the world’ mentality. The usual heaviness associated with the team’s storied legacy was replaced with light-hearted excitement and, ultimately, fun.”

This shift in perspective allowed the riders to embrace the competition without the burden of overwhelming expectations, leading to a spirited performance that kept them competitive throughout the event.

An American-Style Challenge

When it comes to comparing Matterley Basin to American tracks, Thomas likened it to a blend of Unadilla and High Point. “The lush green grass juxtaposed with the black, rutty dirt is reminiscent of Unadilla,”

he noted. “The slippery base and off-cambered corners have a bit of High Point in them as well. It’s one of the more American-style tracks on the MXGP circuit, lacking the unique challenges found at tracks like Lommel or Trentino, which would take more time for American riders to adapt to.”

This familiarity likely played a role in the performance of the riders, allowing them to focus on their strengths rather than overcoming a steep learning curve.
