Kyle Larson makes surprise admission on ‘dumb and aggressive’ incident with Denny Hamlin
Bad news late in the Chicago Street Race for Kyle Larson. He sent it into Turn 6, barely tapped Ty Gibbs and went into the barrier. Larson was the pole winner and was up front for most of the afternoon, but his NASCAR Sunday ended early on Lap 35.
Kyle Larson overdrove the turn trying to catch Ty Gibbs. It was too much. Like many other drivers in the last two years, Larson went right into that tire barrier at Turn 6.
This is going to be a tough one to swallow. Larson likely had a car capable of winning. Now, he’s a DNF along with Shane van Gisbergen. There was just a small tap with Gibbs as Larson turned to avoid wrecking the 54 car.
It was quick thinking by Kyle Larson to avoid Ty Gibbs there. It could have been bad if he hadn’t turned to the right. Larson is a savvy racer and isn’t looking to take anyone else out.
On Saturday, Larson and SVG battled for the win. Today, they are both DNFs and out before the end of the second stage. It has not been the race either driver hoped for. Now, it’s in the hands of the others on the track.
This race is going to come down to pit stops, which tires, wet or slick, drivers are on, and good old-fashioned strategy. Of course, drivers will have to avoid wrecking into the walls on either side of them as well.
Kyle Larson felt confident before wreck
Kyle Larson missed out on potentially winning his fourth Cup Series race of the year after crashing into the barrier at Chicago on Sunday. Larson spoke to NBC Sports about how he’s relieved that Ty Gibbs didn’t get caught in wreck.
- I’m okay. I think all of us were getting a little more confident and confident in breaking,” Larson said about the crash that happened at Turn 6 of the Chicago Street Race. “I just went to the brakes a little deeper in each lap. At that time, as soon as I touched the break, I knew I was in trouble.
“I wasn’t really aiming for anything. I was just gonna go where it was gonna go. It was a big hit. I’m glad Ty didn’t get caught up in it. Just unfortunate.”
So, Kyle Larson gets knocked out before the end of the race. Good news, he has three wins this year. When you have that kind of cushion, these incidents don’t sting as much.
