Lance Armstrong explain shocking reason why he wants Ben O connor to win Vuelta a España
Lance Armstrong has returned to his podcast, *The Move*, to dissect the first week of the Vuelta a España 2024, joined by regular analysts George Hincapie and Johan Bruyneel.
Their latest episode delves into the initial stages of the Spanish Grand Tour, focusing on the standout performance of American rider Brandon McNulty, who claimed victory in the opening time trial with an astonishing average speed of 47 km/h.
The podcast highlights the extreme conditions faced by riders in the early days of the Vuelta. Armstrong noted the significant heat, which has been a major factor in the race.
He pointed out that Ben O’Connor, the current leader, hails from Perth, Australia, a region known for its harsh, arid climate.
Armstrong believes O’Connor’s experience with such conditions could be beneficial as the race progresses:
He’s grown up in a very hot area. That doesn’t guarantee that someone can take the heat, but he’s been exposed to it.”
Johan Bruyneel also addressed the impact of the heat on the race and suggested possible changes to improve conditions for future editions of the Vuelta.
He pointed out the particularly intense heat experienced this year, with temperatures reaching between 37 and 40 degrees Celsius.
Bruyneel advocated for scheduling the Vuelta entirely in September, rather than starting in late August, to mitigate the extreme temperatures seen in recent years: “If you combine the end of August with cities like Seville, Cordoba or Granada, it’s something that is not good.”
As the Vuelta continues, the discussions on *The Move* offer insightful analysis into how riders are coping with the sweltering conditions and how the race could evolve to better manage these challenges.
