NBC Sport: Eli tomac reply on why he choose the The MX14 tire and not MX34s like others
Tomac’s Tire Tactic: How One Rider’s Bold Choice Shaped the Moto Results
In a display of strategic prowess and tire choice brilliance, Eli Tomac dominated the first moto with a performance that left the competition in the dust. The secret to his success? The Dunlop MX14 “scoop” tire, a bold choice that set him apart from the rest of the field.
While the rest of the riders opted for the traditional Dunlop MX34 knobby tire, which is the go-to for most Monster Energy AMA Supercross events, Tomac took a
risk by selecting the MX14, designed specifically for muddy and sandy conditions. The hybrid track presented a mixed bag of challenges: deep dirt in the motocross section and a significant sand turn, both areas where the MX14 could provide an advantage.
Tomac’s gamble paid off spectacularly. His scoop tire enabled him to excel in the deep dirt and sandy sections, giving him a crucial edge during starts and while making passes.
This advantage was evident in the first moto, where Tomac simply left the field behind. “I mean, yeah, it was great racing,” Tomac said. “I was good in the beginning, I was able to make a pass and then get to the front, the tire really helped me. I know I was the only one with it.”
In the second moto, Tomac’s lead was challenged by Jett Lawrence, who managed to keep pace with him for a while. However, Tomac’s earlier advantage was too significant to overcome. The MX14 tire’s performance in the deep sections continued to make the difference, demonstrating the critical role tire choice can play in a race.
Tomac’s success with the scoop tire highlights how a well-considered decision can tip the scales in motocross.
While the rest of the field stuck to the familiar MX34s, Tomac’s strategic tire choice gave him the upper hand where it mattered most.
His victory serves as a testament to the impact of gear choices in racing strategy and reinforces the importance of adapting to track conditions.
