Oregon Ducks’ coach Dan Lanning Offers Injury Update on Jamaree Caldwell After Wisconsin Win
In a thrilling 16-13 victory over the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday night, Oregon Ducks defensive lineman Jamaree Caldwell played a pivotal role in sealing the win, but not without suffering an injury on the crucial play.
With just 1:38 left in the game, Caldwell tipped a pass attempt from Wisconsin quarterback Braedyn Locke, causing the ball to flutter into the hands of Oregon linebacker Matayo Uiagalelei for the game-winning interception.
Head coach Dan Lanning provided an update on Caldwell’s condition following the game, reassuring fans that the defensive lineman was doing well despite the injury. “Yeah, he’s doing good,” Lanning said. “In fact, he was laying down, and he didn’t realize we had the interception, so I told him that. Fired him up. Obviously, you know, that was such a huge play by him, but I think he’s doing good. Batted balls matter, right? Mattered in that moment. Really big play by him.”
The play itself was a testament to Caldwell’s awareness and athleticism. The tipped pass not only gave Oregon the interception but effectively ended Wisconsin’s hopes of a last-minute comeback. Caldwell’s defensive effort in that moment helped solidify his reputation as a key contributor to Oregon’s defense.
While Caldwell’s injury remains a concern, Lanning’s post-game comments were positive. The coach acknowledged the importance of Caldwell’s tipped pass in the win, noting that “batted balls matter,” especially in critical moments like that one. Caldwell’s performance, particularly in the defensive trenches, continues to be a bright spot for Oregon’s defense.
Meanwhile, Matayo Uiagalelei, the player who capitalized on Caldwell’s tipped pass, also received praise from Lanning. Uiagalelei’s performance included five total tackles (four solo), a sack, and the crucial interception. His ability to make plays in key situations was critical in securing the Ducks’ hard-fought victory.
As the Ducks prepare for their next challenge, Caldwell’s status will be closely monitored, but his impact on Saturday night proved just how important his presence is on Oregon’s defensive line.
