Syracuse star adds insult to injury for Miami Hurricanes after devastating loss to Orange
The Miami Hurricanes’ season came to a crashing halt on Saturday in Syracuse at the (former known as Carrier) Dome. Up 21-0 in the second quarter, the Canes imploded, specifically on the defensive side of the ball, falling 42-38.
The loss eliminated the Canes from the ACC Championship Game, sending Clemson in their place. As such, there were some very happy fans in the South Carolina upstate area on Saturday evening – and some very thankful for their former ACC Atlantic division rival.
Orange QB Kyle McCord, who torched the Miami defense for 380 yards and 3 touchdowns, took to Twitter and sent out a very direct – and surely well received – message to Clemson fans after the game.
Ouch. However, McCord wasn’t the only noteworthy member of the Orange to give a nod to Clemson after the win. Syracuse head coach Fran Brown gave a “you’re welcome” during the postgame interview amid a frenzied scene inside the dome (an all too familiar sight lately for Miami fans). It’s one thing to lose, but to do it in the season’s final week to lose, in all likelihood all of your season goals is a gut punch of the highest order. While there might be musings about the Canes still being on the College Football Playoff bubble, Miami was unable to even reach the ACC title game with a generational talent at QB and a loaded roster.
Well, except for perhaps the defensive side of the ball, particularly in the secondary. McCord and the Syracuse receivers made every single Miami defensive back on the field look absolutely foolish. That includes freshman sensation OJ Frederique, who had a brutally poor game, as did all of Miami’s secondary.
This is a loss that’s going to stick with Miami fans for a long time, and it’s one that Clemson fans are going to be appreciative of McCord and the Cuse for a long time, particularly if they defeat SMU and claim the ACC title. And Miami has no one to blame but themselves.
