The 2020 Golden Globes Showcased the Return of the 2010s, You Cant Miss This
Well, that was bound to happen. The Golden Globes of 2024 demonstrated that indeed, the 2010s are returning! The peplums and high-low hemlines on the red carpet at the awards presentation validated the rumours of an Indie Sleaze comeback that had been circulating for months, taking us back to the decade of the 2010s. Whether you like it or not.
The peplum comeback was hinted at in the spring 2024 runways. Among the designers who embraced the controversial style were Prabal Gurung, Alexander McQueen, Cecilie Bahnsen, and Jason Wu. Allison Williams, who is nominated for a fellow traveller, brought the idea to life yesterday night. She wore a black sequined mermaid dress with a tulle train and a billowing peplum that encircled her hips and waist, channelling her inner Marnie Michaels. She adorned her with a black bow as an added touch.
The bow, though it’s popular right now, was very popular in the early 2010s.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who won the Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in The Holdovers, also experimented with the fashion. The actor chose to wear a Rodarte-customized gown with a burgundy silk peplum that echoed the ruffles of her beaded clamshell-style bustier.
The Globes carpet suggests that the high-low hemline is making a resurgence as well. The always chic Hari Nef donned an item from the relevant decade, excavating an archived 2018 couture Alexander Vaulthier ensemble. The seafoam green chiffon high-low of the past is a far cry from the black ruffled dress with contrast stitching. Not only did Nef go asymmetrical, but Selena Gomez also did so in custom Armani Privé, defying the standard high-low hemline with a harsh, diagonal hem that landed by her thigh, the other lagging behind on the earth. Choosing a more feminine interpretation of the architectural high-low, Dylan Mulvaney wore a high-necked dress with ostrich feather embellishments and a romantic train that exposed her shoes. Extra points for the pink tone that’s very millennial!

Even if bows are all the rage right now, the previous decade was also severely dominated by the twee trend. The ornamentation was not lost on the Golden Globes guests. To complement her outfit and lips, Rachel Bosnahan chose a tomato-colored ribbon to go with Allison Williams’ black hair bow. However, Amanda Seyfriend moved the ever-popular hairpiece to her dress, highlighting its column shape with a sparkling bow that runs over the strapless bodice in black and purple.
