Wolper—known for classics like “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”—the car’s history took a notable turn in 1965 when it was sold to composer Elmer Bernstein. Bernstein subsequently provided the vehicle to McQueen, enhancing its provenance.
In 1967, the Cobra was sold to Richard A. Mathis, who then passed it on to Wayman McCoo, brother of singer Marilyn McCoo. The car continued to change hands over the years, eventually making its way to the U.K. in 2006, where it remains registered.
The 289 Cobra is powered by a 4.7-liter V-8 engine from Ford, paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. Although later Cobras featured larger engines, the 289 version played a crucial role in cementing Carroll Shelby’s reputation in the sports car world.
CSX2161, known as lot F99 at the Mecum auction on August 16, represents more than just automotive engineering excellence; it is a piece of cinematic and cultural history.
