What son of Cheltenham Festival hero Annie Power did at Punchestown that got all shocking

Mystical Power, the son of Annie Power, the star of the Cheltenham Festival, won easily at Punchestown on Sunday, propelling him to the top of the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle market; in the Grade Two, Mark Walsh easily led Willie Mullins’ five-year-old to victory.

Perfectly bred as a son of Galileo out of the great Champion Hurdle-winning mare Annie Power, the five-year-old is trained by Willie Mullins and has had a fantastic debut for the formidable ownership team of JP McManus, John Magnier, and Rich Ricci.

Mystical Power made a winning transition from bumper races in May to hurdle races at Galway two months later. He avoided the rearranged Lawlor’s of Naas Novice Hurdle on Friday and was eliminated at the fifth round of a Grade Two race that his trainer has won with horses like Vautour (2014), Douvan (2015), Min (2015), and Impaire Et Passe (2023).

Mark Walsh rode behind the four runners for the majority of the two-mile distance as his stablemate Lombron took on a pace-setting role. Walsh was attempting to complete a big-race double in the McManus colours after winning a Grade Three aboard Spillane’s Tower in the previous race on the card.

Supporters of Mystical Power had a brief moment of concern when their horse had to settle down on the home turn, but as he continued, he appeared to be getting better, and he easily shot ahead of Jigoro by seven lengths in the straight.
