With Vital MX: Jeremy Coker Reflects on Star Racing Yamaha’s Success and Future Challenges with riders
**Vital MX**: Since Star Racing Yamaha took over the 450 effort in 2021, the team has secured two Pro Motocross championships and a Supercross championship. How do you feel about this success?
**Jeremy Coker**: It’s definitely impressive. We had set ambitious goals, and achieving them was even beyond our expectations. It has raised the bar for us moving forward and will push us to aim even higher.
**Vital MX**: Maintaining success at the top is challenging. What factors contribute to your team’s continued performance?
**Jeremy**: Our success is largely due to the talented riders and dedicated team members we have.
**Vital MX**: Eli Tomac’s move to Star Racing Yamaha was significant. Can you discuss how his transition has gone, especially regarding his new attitude?
**Jeremy**: Eli was at a point where he seemed a bit disenchanted with the sport. We focused on rekindling his enjoyment by involving his family and close circle, creating a more familiar and supportive environment. This approach has helped him reconnect with his passion and performance.
**Vital MX**: Eli has mentioned that his training includes occasional sessions with other riders. How does riding with teammates affect his performance?
**Jeremy**: Eli’s training has always been solid, but riding alone can sometimes hinder his early-season performance. By training with others, he gets back into racing rhythm more quickly, which helps him maintain a competitive edge throughout the season.
**Vital MX**: Dylan Ferrandis is another top rider on the team. How do you manage the dynamic between him and Eli, especially given their competitive nature?
**Jeremy**: It’s a challenge, but it’s manageable with clear communication and mutual respect. Both riders are intense competitors, and it’s crucial to maintain a balance where they push each other but also work together for the team’s success.
**Vital MX**: There were some concerns about the new 450 model and its impact on Eli’s decision to renew his contract. Can you elaborate on that?
**Jeremy**: It’s understandable that Eli wanted to ensure the new bike would meet his expectations. Once he tested it and felt it was an improvement, he was enthusiastic about continuing with the team. His positive feedback was reassuring.
**Vital MX**: Ken Roczen’s transition to Suzuki has also been noted. Does his satisfaction with the new bike concern you?
**Jeremy**: Ken Roczen is a formidable competitor, and his satisfaction with the Suzuki bike does make him a strong threat. We have to stay vigilant and continue to improve our own setup to stay competitive.
**Vital MX**: Eli Tomac is reportedly pleased with the improvements in the ‘23 bike compared to the ‘22. How does this affect your expectations for the upcoming season?
**Jeremy**: Eli’s satisfaction with the ‘23 bike is very promising. If the improvements he’s noted translate to on-track performance, it could be a significant advantage for us this season. We’re optimistic about the potential for both Eli and Dylan.
**Vital MX**: Regarding technical preferences, why does Eli use X Trig clamps instead of Neken?
**Jeremy**: It comes down to personal preference. Eli prefers the X Trig clamps for their less rigid feel, which suits his riding style better. We accommodate these preferences to optimize each rider’s performance.
**Vital MX**: Justin Cooper will race a few 450 races this season. What’s the rationale behind this decision?
**Jeremy**: Racing the 450 will help Justin gain valuable experience and maintain his competitive edge, especially since he can’t compete in 250 Supercross. It also provides an opportunity to evaluate his readiness for a potential future 450 ride.
**Vital MX**: The 250 team has several new riders this year, including Jordan Smith and Stylez Robertson. Who do you see as the standout performer?
**Jeremy**: Jordan Smith, Levi Kitchen, and Nate Thrasher are all strong contenders. Levi has been performing exceptionally well recently, and Jordan is in a good place with his new environment and support. This year could be very promising for them.
**Vital MX**: Jordan Smith’s recent struggles and injuries have been well-documented. How do you view his potential this season?
**Jeremy**: Jordan is in a better position than ever, with a supportive environment and personal stability. If he stays focused and healthy, this could be his breakthrough year, with the potential to win a championship.
Star Racing Yamaha’s blend of experience, strategic adjustments, and rider support underscores their ongoing commitment to excellence. As they prepare for the upcoming season, their approach highlights a keen focus on optimizing both individual and team performance.
